Sitting on the porch of a decaying house, an old brown mug sat, the top chipped, a warm breeze brushing against sun-heated ceramic.
"There is nothing more potent than a cup of tea," Old Ma’am once told her.
Twenty-year-old Lyric Mason lifted the mug, her sad eyes drawn to its flaw. She’d come home to say goodbye to her grandmother and to take over an eerie family legacy that would forever burden her.
She hadn't count on twenty-five-year-old Grayson Kramer.

"The women in that family will drive you insane," the town said. "They’ll steal your heart and destroy your soul," they promised.
Despite himself, troubled Grayson was fascinated by Lyric, by the rumors and accusations that surrounded her. Prison had changed him and guilt had nearly destroyed him.
It was the guilt that would draw them together.
For in Hiccup, Mississippi, a decrepit house sat, the home feared by the locals, a group of ravens perching on the roof. In this house, there was a tea cup full of secrets held by a woman Grayson couldn’t ignore.

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of In the Land of Tea and Ravens by R.K. Ryals. Come and join me for a cup of tea as I tell you about it.Sometimes we have things in our life that are monumental, sometimes we choose these things, and sometimes they are passed down to us.
For Lyric Mason, "It began and ended with a cup." ... "It was simply a cup."
A cup that was the single most important thing in her life, a cup that connected her to her family. A cup that being tied to made her, in the eyes of the simple minds in Hiccup, Mississippi, an outcast. These townsfolk were afraid of the Mason women, they blamed them said they drove men mad, drove them insane.
What lengths would you go to in order to protect your family?
"Protect the cup. Protect it..."
Grayson Kramer, a boy working on his grandparents farm next door, is intrigued by Lyric. There's a brokenness about her, a pain he sees in the depth of her eyes, it's something he understands all too well.
"A girl with a tear on her cheek.
A girl surrounded by ravens.
A girl who drank tea with the dead."
Brought together by feelings of guilt and pain and shame, Lyric and Mason embark on an romance against all odds. Lyric goes against her head and follows her heart. Sharing a piece of her history with him...
Grayson is confused, curious, and captivated by her. He continues to make promises and willingly follows her ... anywhere, everywhere...against her initial protests.
"I'll take you to a mad tea party that never ends."
This story was hauntingly beautiful. The type of story that leaves you filled with hope and tiny bit of insanity.
"Well, there's a certain freedom to insanity. You should try it."
When I hit the last page, I had tears in my eyes, a smile on my face and laugh bubbling in my throat. I had but one thought, one I share with Grayson,
"I think," he said after a moment, "I think I wouldn't mind another cup of tea."
"Why is it I'm suddenly obsessed with tea?"

In the Land of Tea and Ravens eBook RK Ryals Eden Crane Designs Melissa Ringsted Reviews
R.K. Ryals has done it again. She has written a truly breathtaking piece of art. Her soulful, southern charm caresses you and pulls you into her stories. The woman made drinking hot tea an intimate, sensual act between two people. Hot tea!
This story encompasses Southern folklore, mystery and intrigue with loss, heartache and love as only Mrs. Ryals can. Her writing speaks to me. It takes me to small country towns, farms and decaying buildings. It engulfs me in loss, pain and love. She paints the entire picture.
In The Land Of Tea and Ravens is a hauntingly beautiful tale with bits of fairytale, folklore, and romance. It will touch your heart and leave you with a hankering for a cup of tea.
I am a huge fan of tea. I hate coffee. I cannot live without tea.
When I saw the cover of this book I just had to see what it was about. The cover and title had me make an instant purchase. Okay, maybe not instant but it was immediately after I finished the sample.
I am absolutely in love with this story! Tea, a magical intense romance, fear, hope, and so many emotions. I'm more for historical (Gothic, mainly) romances but I fell in love with Lyric and Grayson's love for each other.
Everything about this book was perfect to me. I love how it is surrounded by tea and a far away tale. It wasn't cheesy at all and I really appreciated that (lol). The character's names were refreshing even. I'm usually a pinch annoyed at super average character names or super weird names. So it was nice to have an altogether perfect book that I devoured faster than usual. I really couldn't put this one down.
First let me say that I was really annoyed when I saw this story pop up on my page. I'm waiting for the next Scribes of Medeisia book, and it's making me a little bit cranky. That said, I'm really glad I finally overcame my resentment and read this.
One thing that is so impressive about R.K. Ryals is her ability to write within multiple genres. From the Redemption series to Scribes was a jump, but then reading The Story of Awkward and then this book, it is clear to me that Ms. Ryals has a very big wheelhouse indeed. Her books are uniformly well written and well edited, and they are all really different and unique. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors.
Based on the description, this isn't a type of story I thought I would enjoy. I hesitated to buy it. When I finally started reading, I was pleasantly surprised. This story was like a delicate flower. It was sweet and fragile, and it bloomed ever so slowly. The characters weren't whiny or annoying. They were quiet and contemplative. The entire tone of the book was that way. There was nothing rushed or frantic. The author didn't rely on stupid jealousies or miscommunications to create tension. The interactions between the characters were totally honest. This was a story about healing and acceptance.
If you are interested in a lot of action or intrigue or if you long for cheating spouses and cat fights, this is not the book for you. If you are open to something more ethereal, I would recommend that you give this story a try. There is sometimes great beauty in simplicity.
I don't know if I have ever read such a beautifully written story before. The writing was lyrical and painted every detail with such clarity, that imagining the people and places was second nature. I've always been an RK Ryals fan, but this story was phenomenal; I am completely blown away!
The story moves slowly, not in a boring way, but in a way as to make you immerse yourself into it, rather than around it. It's written for you to take your time with each word. Think of reading this story as if you were making tea - tea takes time to brew, and like this story... you really find yourself settling in with the pages to steep in what is transpiring.
It's mysterious. It's absolutely haunting. It's confusing, and sexy, and angsty, and... hopeful.
