Four teenagers find their way through the challenges of adolescence and discover they are actually genetic siblings separated as embryos before they were even born. A tragic illness draws their families together, forcing one father to face a secret he had kept hidden for years. Spanning one academic school year, teenagers and their parents navigate depression, substance abuse, homophobia, sexual orientation, chronic illness, and suicide in search of their individual true north. The difference between true north and magnetic north is just a matter of degrees. Follow these four teenagers and their parents and find a little of yourself and your parents in each of them. One pair of siblings, Michelle and Stephen, eighteen and seventeen, live in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and their father has a spinal cord injury. Their births are the result of in vitro fertilization, where eggs are harvested and fertilized outside the womb. The other pair, a set of twins named Caroline and Brian, fourteen, are born as a result of an embryo transfer by a lesbian couple. Caroline develops pediatric leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant, thereby compelling her mothers to search for the family whose embryos they had adopted sixteen years earlier. These teenagers are old souls who have lived before and will live again. The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Rotary's motto is Service Above Self.

A small story of four particular souls and the two families that encircle them, True North illustrates the profound ripples each person's life makes in the larger world. The main characters demonstrate how facing one's interpersonal fears, particularly the worst ones, can create peak moments in life and deepen our connections with others—not always the others we expect.

Krill begins the book with glimpses of our four protagonists caught in hopeful reflection between a previous life that ended especially early and the moments before they enter the world again. Although I'm not a believer in literal reincarnation, her skill as a writer allowed me to suspend my disbelief and follow the transition of each soul as parable.

Without lecturing, Krill takes on the silent operation of prejudice in the ordinary lives of good people, and reveals the damage done by complicity. The bravery of young people struggling with hard truths unlocks unrealized potential in themselves and their parents. Krill found an artful way to create a microcosm of our global conflicts and to show the way through them, and as a result of her clean prose and excellent characterizations, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

This is not a happy beginning story, nor a purely happy ending story, in the sense that life remains realistically challenging for the two families and their four teens after the period of time we share with them. But something changed for the better among all the people touched by their transformations, and then among all the people affected in the widening circles throughout time, and so on...  I was moved and inspired.

True North Heather Ehrman Krill 9781504959056 Books Reviews

Unique writing, very well done. Well worth the read.
An enjoyable thought provoking read that has far broader appeal than it's targeted young adult audience.
Great story offering much food for thought, I would certainly promote. A good cross over story full of yea buts and what ifs. It's all about reaching individual potential.
Great book
I picked this book on the recommendation from Facebook. Having gone through the struggles of fertility myself I found the idea of fertility and its many facets fascinating. Many times I asked myself if I could be as selfless as they were. A great read that makes you think after you have finished.
The author has crafted a layered and intriguing tale which can be enjoyed on many levels and will provoke thoughtful conversation among readers. Ms Krill's fascinating look at "family" calls for a multi generational book group to share reactions and consider new ways of recognizing what family can mean. Like all well written novels this book will appeal to young adult readers as well as older folks who want to think into the future.
I believe this could have been a really great book if the author had kept working on it until it was done. The concepts are good, but it is just not finished. The voices of the various characters are not clear (which is important because each chapter is of a different voice.) Once or twice the voice jumps from one character to the other mid chapter with no warning. It would be great if the author would go back, read each chapter separately, pretend to be that character, and do the rewrite from the perspective of that character.
